Just wondering how the base at Gulfport fared. I went through DPPO training there in 1969 (company 129) and just missed Camille. I was in the 'Nam by then. My thoughts and prayers are with the survivors of this tradgedy, but you'll get through it. A battalion of Seabees could rebuild the Gulf coast in short order. CAN DO! Added: September 2, 2005 |

This was posted up by Bruce MacDonald to my e-mail. For those of you interested. Chief Just talked to George Eichert in Gulfport. He verbally passed the following sitrep: - Everyone on base is safe; no injuries. Not sure of people in town, but there have been reports of bodies in the surf. Evacuated housing and put everyone into the warehouses per contingency plan. - 1256 people in warehouses. Took in a few people in who appeared at gate after their homes were destroyed. - Storm has passed, had hurricane force winds for about 8 hours; winds of over 120 mph with gusts to 150 for about 2 hours - Many, many trees down. Believe that there were some local tornados on base due to damage patterns. - Power lines are down; 20 to 30 poles are down. Will be a major effort to restore power. - Making final CONCAP priority list. Power restoration will be an immediate priority. - Comm: No internet, no TV, no commercial Cell or telephone service. DSN is working (George's number: 868-2123) - Buildings: working damage list now. DAT teams will be out at daylight tomorrow. - Commissary probably destroyed. Roof appears to have blown off, front facade pealed off. Assume a significant amount of water damage. - Seabee Museum too heavy hit; holes in building; damaged siding. - Lost many metal buildings. METOC facility destroyed (appears to have been hit by tornado?). NCTC metal buildings took heavy hit; 4 to 6 demolished. - Housing in general - superficial damage, siding and roofs. George did an all hands in warehouse to brief people on status. Decided to keep them in warehouse for time being, no sewer service on base. - New buildings (eg Bldg 1, Seabee HQ's) appeared to fare well. - Base potable water system is on line. - Appears to be a lot of damage in town. Route 90 was reported 6 feet under water. Heard that storm surge was 5 ft higher than Camille. - CNN wanted to interview George, and had telephone interview set up, but comm went down before interview. - Mission status: Cannot perform at present time (NCTC, Regimental Training) - Understands rules of engagement with local community - Stressing safety with all hands and at every opportunity. I haven't heard anything about what has happened to the Seabee Base or the Bees in that area. Just what I see on our local news of our reporters in Gulfport. Unbelievable devastation. When I was stationed in Gulfport, I went through Hurricane Elena Labor Day 1985 and the devastation was bad but not nearly this bad. Here are a few sites for you all to look at to see pics and videos of the area. These are TV stations from Gulfport/Biloxi and New Orleans. www.wlox.com www.wdsu.com www.wwltv.com I was also stationed in New Orleans for 2 years. I had walked and driven those streets, many times, that are now underwater. I hope we hear something soon from someone about the Seabee Base. Added: September 1, 2005 |
